Hi, my name is Martha Rubell. I was born in Buenos Aires and since I was 19, I dedicated my life to the search and accumulation of antique pieces of art. The reason why I have lived my life though this activity is maybe related to my formal education in Fine Arts, which gave me a different approach to objects from an aesthetic point of view, as well as a constant curiosity for the different ways in which artists and craftsmen have worked throughout times.
In the very beginning of my profession, my knowledge of most of the objects was quite basic but each antique has driven my through a path of investigations and discoveries which I enjoy tremendously, enhancing my professional and personal interest for the piece itself and its creator. I began to work as a supplier for antiquaries, experts and collectors, from whom I learnt a lot and keep learning, and at the same time encouraged me to follow this road I am taking. Furthermore, my parents´ big house collaborated with the space necessary to gather all these magnificent and beloved objects in one single place throughout the past 40 years. Attracted by copper, brass, iron and metals in general, I oriented my purchases to lighting devices and lately to the crystals ornaments that embellished each piece of art. Today, this collection contains more than 300 items considering ceiling lamps, wall lamps, chandeliers and tulipas. The original accessories -chains, pulleys, clips and others- manifest my constant intention for rescuing even the part of the objects in order to keep them as authentically as possible when the piece of art is to be located into my customers` houses. Moreover, my collection includes metal grids, porcelain, glass and crystal objects, silver, ink pots, sewing machines, phonographs, gramophones, 3000 old records as well as lots of ornamental objects. I am completely satisfied with the fulfilled task, but as every piece of art must follow its path, I am partially selling my collection to whom enjoys and values, as much as I do, the magic of the past human labor.
You show supreme taste and write eruditely from the experience of one who has done her homework…Well done.
Thanks for your comment!!
Dear Madame Rubell,
I have several pieces of the Sarreguemines Digoin ceramic Bowls that I bought (of all the places) in Sudan. I wonder how did it ever arrive in Sudan in the first place… and which year it was manufactured. I have some photos that I would like to send to you but I am not sure how to do that in your website. Perhaps you can send me an email address which I can then use to send the photos for your review.
Awaiting your respond
Thank you.
Mariah

Dear Madame
I read your excellent history of sunglasses and wonderered if you could identify the most unusual pair I have seen to date, my thoughts are that they were for an aviator or dessert use.
I would like to email you a picture.
My kind regards
Marcus.
I own a very rare 1887 footed, reticulated flower-encrusted German Sitzendorf centerpiece that my mother purchased in Den Hague (Netherlands) in 1953.
I believe the mark is a Sitzendorf (looks like 3 crossed cotton-swabs or match sticks, with 1 more thinner one, (4 total) slanted behind) in blue, under glaze. My mother was told by Butterfield & Butterfield (San Francisco auction house) that it is very rare. It’s in mint condition, definitely Museum quality.
What is your email address so I could send you photo, and base Mark photo?
Thank you.

Thanks for your marvelous web site! My passion: I built many lamps in papers and I tried to find old Christmas lamps pictures to create Christmas lamps myself. You’re the first big web site I found with many examples of vintage bulbs. I apreciated and your collection is great! In a near future, I’ll create a matrix to create paper Christmas lamps myself. My objective is to create paper bulbs to clip them on modern Christmas lamps to imitate the vintage lamps as you show. If I suceed to to it, I’ll present the result on my web site http;//jolie-lampe.com
I enjoyed your detailed information on wagasa and other traditional Japanese oil-paper umbrella. I imported and sold
bangasa here in New York in the 60’s, and have done much
research on them. Rembrandt was fascinated by the large
bangasa he found in Amsterdam, and used it as a prop in at
least 30 works. James McNeil Whistler and Thomas Eakins were
also charmed by these umbrellas. Ditto the great French photo-
grapher Henri Lartique — he used Japanese parasols and large
umbrellas in a great many photographs. Now Japanese-style
umbrellas are being made in China — but sold here as Made in
Japan. The construction of the ribs is a dead giveaway.

Hi Martha,
Wonderful blog! I could spend hours here!
I am trying to date a very early piece of crackle glaze earthenware Moriyama [ aka Moriyami ] pottery and I wondered if I might send you a photo of it. What is your email? Thanks.

Hi Martha,
I am currently doing a project in my history of textiles class. I have an ancient purse and had to do my own research to find out where it comes from. You have almost the exact same bag on here, the greek 1920s evening bag. However she told me I could not use a blog as a credible source. I can’t find this bag in ANY online museum or anything nearly like it. Could you tell me where I might find the evidence I need or a source to look into?
Thank you so much, I look forward to hearing from you!
Hello Ms. Rubell,
I was wondering if you’re selling that beautiful sculpture of the Madonna by Frank Coronado? If so, how much and what would be the shipping cost to the USA.
Thanks so much and hope to hear from you,
William
